#23 US Navy, San Diego, CA

Acetate with acetate fringe.

This is a classic pillow cover from WW2. This type was made en masse, with just a minor custom change to the city and state on the bottom.

I suspect this scarf dates before Singapore became a sovereign state in 1965.

#21 Canadian Assn. of Kanagawa

Synthetic velvet, hand embroidered, some silk screening

This is one of the few military pillow covers I have that date from the Korean War (rather than WW2). Also unusual is that it is personalized:

I love bird watching, so this scarf is really appealing. My favorite: the troglodyte des forets, or the winter wren. I've loved that name since I heard it on Mr. Roger's television show. The goglu, or the bobokink is a close second.

#19 Boulder Dam, Nevada (or Hoover Dam?)

Acetate with silk screened images. Acetate fringe.

Souvenir pillow cover. The name of this dam changed several times. It was orignally Boulder Dam, renamed Hoover Dam (by Herbert Hoover), back to Boulder Dam (by Roosevelt), then back to Hoover Dam. Based on this information, this pillow case was probably made before 1947.

#17 Los Angeles, California

I date this scarf some time after the Dodgers made their move to Los Angeles, approx. 1962-64.

#16 Holland Hankie

Cotton, machine finished.

The border of this hankie is decorated with tulips and other bulb type flowers. The dolls/children are dressed in various dutch costumes.

#15 Fort Devens, Massachusettes

Another WW2 pillow cover - these were sold with an envelope called a pillow mailer. The soldier/sailor could easily mail their loved ones a souvenir from the camp where they were serving.

Light and lovely scarf. Makes me want to pack up and stop by for a visit.

#13 High School Sports

The trophy reads 'Championship Won C.H.S. 1956'. Fun period uniforms - really short shorts on the basketball players. Pre-Brown vs Board of Education teams.

#12 Counting Calories

Cotton, hand rolled, Burmul Original.

Nothing like blowing your nose into a handkerchief and simultaneously being reminded that an oyster is 50 calories - which seems a little low to me.

Polyester or acetate, hand rolled.

#10 Lordsburg, New Mexico - US Army

Silk screen on acetate, yarn fringe.

Lordsburg was the location of an US Army internment camp from 1942 through 1945. Japanese, Italian and German persons were kept at this location.

An incident at the camp where two Japanese men were shot and killed was never fully investigated. Although the soldier responsible claimed the two were trying to escape, at least one of the men had a severe back condition that prevented him from running. They were shot in the back.

First official cotton hankie. Fetching images such as the state capitol in Helena, Flathead Lake, Trick Falls, and Glacier Park Hotel.

I think they should be named Paris and Nicole.

#7 Naval Hankie

Silk, Cutwork, Probably my oldest item.

This piece is from the early 1900's. The silk is filmy and see-through. The pink edging has cutwork done. Count only 46 stars on the flag.

Rayon and silk, hand rolled, made in Japan. I like this one because I have a pillow case cover like it, and because of the asian-style writing.

Silk, hand rolled. Scarf signed by artist Tammis Keefe. One of my favorites because of the color choices and the mid century modern design style.
